豪猪即是一种全身长满尖刺，居息在森林里的一种哺乳动物。它有很强的生命力，往往生病后都能很快痊愈，这和它的进食习惯有关。豪猪是草食动物，尤其喜食含苦味的植物的茎和根部。由于一般含苦味的植物都是药草的根源，因此，豪猪本身具有能解百毒的抗体免疫功能。当它受伤或生病时，它会去寻食一种草药。草药在豪猪体内消化后和它的解毒抗体混合产生一种分泌物来化解它体内的病毒，使它迅速痊愈。而一些仍然剩留在豪猪体内的分泌物，久而久之就累积形成如结石般的东西也就是所谓的豪猪枣。因为每只豪猪的体质，强弱，基因结构，获取食物草药的环境会影响豪猪枣的结构。这也是为什么每粒豪猪枣的外观，光滑度，大小，素质，颜色等都有差异。如果一粒豪猪枣滞留在豪猪体内的时间越久，它的体积将会越大，药性成份的累积更多，品质更佳。然而并非每只豪猪体内都有豪猪枣，即使有也是一只才的一粒，所以身价非凡。

总括来说豪猪枣可分为三等级：
一）粉枣：取自较强壮的豪猪。这些分泌物在豪猪体内经过一段较长的时间
才形成。是品质最佳，价格最贵的。粉枣的颜色大部分呈红褐色，粉红色，巧克力色等。表面光滑，较实心，触摸时感觉较其他枣硬。有些粉枣横切观之似有一层层的细纹。它有浓郁 的中草药的香气。味道甘苦即干多于苦。药疗的功效最佳。
二）半粉枣：每只豪猪的体质有所差异，获取食物的环境中所含的草药性质也有所不同，不同的豪猪枣就如此形成。在外观，半粉枣的颜色呈红褐色，粉红，青褐色等。表面较粗糙且参有一些杂草枝物，触摸时有硬中带软的感觉，味道苦甘。药疗功效接近粉枣，价格较粉枣便宜。
三）草枣：它的外观比以上两种豪猪枣更粗糙。颜色呈青褐色。杂有许多草状物，触摸时较于半粉枣，味道苦涩，可磨成粉药用。是枣中价格最便宜的，但医疗效果也很好。
豪猪枣的药用价值
根据中药学上的纪录，我们的祖先和一些原住民很早就有药用豪猪枣的智慧。如今随着医学的进步，通过研究也确认了豪猪枣在医疗上是有一定的功效与价值。它对以下一些病症有很明显的附加药用功效。

如何服用豪猪枣？
小孩份量：0.375g分3次
成人份量：0.375g分2次,1次0.19g
一天服用1次0.19g；轻者一天一次。
服用方法 ：(一)空腹，先喝水，然后将豪猪枣粉末含在口中缓缓吞下。
(二)空腹，先喝水，将豪猪枣粉末倒在汤匙内加点水，以牙签搅匀即可服用。

3.”Grassy”, this type of porcupine date has more coarser surface when compared to the other two types. It is of greenish brown colour. Although it is among the cheapest porcupine date it is of good quality as well.
The differences depend on the regions where the porcupines are found. Nowadays, the “blooded” is not common. The “powdery” and the “grassy” types are as good.
In tradition, porcupine date had been used as medicine by hill tribes in the Southern China and South-East Asia. Olden Chinese medical text had recorded the uses of porcupine date. It is used as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, natural antibody, immunization booster, and body-detox.
